Artgerecht is a German term used to describe care, housing or treatment of animals that conforms to the species’ natural needs and behaviors. The word combines art (meaning the characteristic behavior and biology of a species) with gerecht (appropriate or fitting). In everyday usage, it signals that the animal’s welfare is considered in line with its biological requirements rather than solely with productivity or convenience.

The concept is central to animal welfare discussions in farming, breeding, pet care, zoos, and research. Artgerechte Haltung (species-appropriate husbandry) encompasses several dimensions: adequate space and environmental design that allows natural movements; opportunities for social interaction where species-appropriate; enrichment and stimuli that enable mental and physical activity; appropriate nutrition and water; and conditions that support health, comfort, and safety. Rules and guidelines aimed at achieving artgerechte conditions are found in national animal welfare laws, veterinary standards, and international welfare frameworks. Examples include access to outdoor areas or pasture for grazing livestock; substrates and space for pigs to express rooting and foraging; perches and hens’ access to outdoor runs; dogs receiving regular exercise and social contact; and enrichment for captive wildlife.

Critically, artgerecht is a normative standard rather than a purely objective measure. What qualifies as species-appropriate can vary by species, life stage, and context, and it may be interpreted differently by producers, regulators, and scientists. While it provides a common reference for welfare quality, its assessment often requires interdisciplinary evaluation of behavior, physiology, and environment.
