An animator is a professional who creates moving images by sequencing drawings, models, or digital frames to simulate motion. Animators work in film and television, video games, advertising, and online media, translating stories, characters, and ideas into motion. The role can involve creating original character animation, supervising motion in a shot, or refining timing and expressive acting through movement.

Animation methods range from traditional hand-drawn and stop-motion techniques to 2D digital animation and 3D computer-generated imagery. Some artists specialize in cutout or motion graphics for broadcast, while others focus on character animation, visual effects, or technical aspects such as rigging and simulation.

Workflows typically begin with storyboarding and layout, followed by planning the timing and key poses. An animator then creates rough keyframes, refines in-between frames, and, for 3D work, applies rigs and skinning. After animation, clean-up, coloring, compositing, and final rendering are performed. Collaboration with directors, editors, sound designers, and other artists shapes the final product.

Skills include drawing and spatial reasoning, a strong sense of timing and acting, and proficiency with relevant software and hardware. Education ranges from formal degrees in animation or film to self-taught practice, with portfolios and demo reels serving as primary credentials. The field emphasizes both creative storytelling and technical problem solving, and professionals may work as staff, freelancers, or part of studios.
