It is designed for binary control tasks where intermediate positions are not required, making it simpler and often more robust than continuous-position actuators.

Operation is typically binary: a control signal drives the actuator to switch between the on and off states. Many aanuitactuators use solenoids, which create linear motion when energized, or pneumatic or hydraulic two-position actuators that move a component between two end positions.
