XLR4

XLR4 is a high-performance interconnect standard envisioned for carrying data, control signals, and power over a single link in professional multimedia, broadcast, and industrial systems. It is presented as the fourth generation in the XLR family, extending earlier interfaces with higher bandwidth, deterministic timing, and improved electromagnetic compatibility, while aiming for broad interoperability across device types.

The XLR4 specification defines a layered approach that includes a flexible physical layer and a multi-channel transport protocol. Physical options cover copper-based balanced connections and optical fiber variants, enabling deployments from short-run studio cables to long-haul network links. The transport layer supports multi-lane data streams, with robust error detection, flow control, and optional encryption for sensitive content. The design emphasizes low and predictable latency, aiming for sub-microsecond end-to-end timing in typical configurations.

A key feature of XLR4 is its emphasis on compatibility and modularity. The standard provides clear guidelines for cabling, pinout, and shielding to minimize crosstalk and signal skew. It also offers adapters and bridges to enable reuse of existing XLR3-era devices where feasible, alongside dedicated XLR4 hardware that can operate natively at higher speeds and with greater channel counts. Security and device discovery are addressed through optional authentication and metadata channels.
