WhateverGreen

WhateverGreen is a cross-platform open-source macOS kernel extension (kext) designed to fix graphics-related issues. Developed as part of the Acidanthera project, it patches display drivers to improve compatibility and stability of GPUs on Macs and Hackintosh systems. The goal is to enable macOS to run more reliably with a variety of graphics configurations.

The kext works in conjunction with Lilu.kext, using a patching framework to apply device properties and framebuffer patches. It can inject PCI device IDs, adjust framebuffer personalities, and fix problems with EDID, HDMI/DisplayPort outputs, and related display paths. WhateverGreen also addresses issues related to power management and other GPU-specific quirks that can block proper boot or operation.

Supported hardware includes Intel integrated GPUs, AMD discrete GPUs, and historically Nvidia GPUs. The scope covers many macOS graphics configurations, including older Intel generations and newer AMD families. The project is regularly updated to support new GPU families and macOS releases, reflecting ongoing developments in graphics support for Hackintosh setups.

Usagewise, WhateverGreen is commonly installed in Hackintosh environments alongside Lilu and other tools (such as bootloaders like OpenCore or Clover) to enable macOS to boot with non-Apple GPUs and to resolve common display-related problems. It is used to improve stability and compatibility rather than to provide raw performance enhancements.
