The concept has appeared in contemporary design literature and practice as a way to frame form as something produced through repeated making and testing.

Core principles of vormwij include constraint-driven shaping, where material and production limits steer form; perceptual orientation, aligning form with viewer experience and interpretation; modular recombination, enabling parts to be swapped or reconfigured to explore alternatives; and iterative prototyping, refining form through successive digital simulations and physical models. These principles encourage designers to treat form as evolving rather than pre-determined.

Methods and workflow typically begin with clear goals and constraints, followed by generating initial forms, simulating behavior and aesthetics, and fabricating prototypes for evaluation and refinement. Practitioners commonly employ computer-aided design, rapid prototyping, and lightweight simulations to explore multiple iterations and configurations before final realization.
