Virheenhavaitsemista (engl. error detection) refers to methods and techniques used to identify errors or faults in data, systems, or processes. The concept is essential in fields such as computer science, electronics, telecommunications, and quality control. Effective error detection allows systems to maintain integrity, reliability, and safety by detecting inconsistencies before they lead to malfunctions or catastrophic failures.

In digital communications, error detection is commonly implemented with redundant information added to the transmitted data. Common schemes include parity bits, checksums, cyclic redundancy checks (CRC) and error‑correcting codes such as Hamming codes. These mechanisms compare the received data with the expected redundancy to determine whether a bit error has occurred. The chosen algorithm balances detection probability, overhead, and computational complexity.

In software engineering, static analysis tools and runtime assertions are used to detect code defects and violations of correctness specifications. Validation and verification processes such as unit tests, integration tests, and formal proofs also embody error‑detection principles. In manufacturing, inspection protocols and statistical sampling serve to detect defects in physical products.

Error detection can be classified as passive or active. Passive detection relies on monitoring and reconstructing error patterns after the fact, whereas active detection actively introduces checks during operation. Combining multiple methods, such as layering checksums with a watchdog timer, is a common strategy for increasing fault tolerance. The field continues to evolve with advances in machine learning, which can learn error patterns from large datasets, and with quantum computing research that explores new error-detection protocols for quantum bits.
