Error correcting refers to methods used to detect and correct errors that occur when data are transmitted or stored. It is typically achieved through error-correcting codes (ECC), which add structured redundancy to the original data so the receiver can identify and recover corrupted symbols without requiring retransmission. Error correction goes beyond mere detection by enabling reconstruction of the intended information.

The core idea is to encode data into codewords using mathematical structures such as linear block codes or convolutional codes. Decoding uses the redundancy to compute syndromes or likelihoods and to determine the most probable original codeword. Key concepts include the minimum Hamming distance, which determines how many errors can be corrected or detected, and the code rate, the ratio of information symbols to total symbols. Common families include Reed-Solomon codes, BCH codes, LDPC codes, turbo codes, and Hamming codes. Reed-Solomon, for example, is widely used in CDs, DVDs, Blu-ray discs, QR codes, and data transmission systems; LDPC and turbo codes are prominent in modern communications.

Error-correcting approaches are often categorized as forward error correction (FEC), where redundancy is transmitted to enable correction at the receiver, and automatic repeat request (ARQ), where the receiver can request retransmission. Many systems combine FEC with ARQ to balance redundancy, latency, and bandwidth.

Historically, the concept draws on Shannon’s channel capacity theory and Hamming’s early codes. Today, ECC underpins reliable computing and storage, supporting robust operation over noisy channels and with imperfect storage media, from memory modules to optical and magnetic media.
