Venenschwellung

Venenschwellung, also known as venous swelling or venous distension, refers to the abnormal enlargement or dilation of veins. This condition can occur in various parts of the body, but it is most commonly observed in the legs. Venenschwellung is often a symptom of underlying venous insufficiency, a condition where the veins have difficulty returning blood to the heart.

Several factors can contribute to venenschwellung. Prolonged standing or sitting, a sedentary lifestyle, obesity, and a family history of venous problems are common risk factors. Hormonal changes, such as those experienced during pregnancy, can also play a role. In some cases, trauma or injury to a vein can lead to swelling.

The symptoms of venenschwellung can vary. Mild cases may present as a feeling of heaviness or aching in the legs, particularly at the end of the day. As the condition progresses, visible veins may become more prominent, appearing as a network of blue or purplish lines beneath the skin. In more severe instances, swelling, pain, skin changes, and even ulcerations can develop.

Diagnosis of venenschwellung typically involves a physical examination and a review of the patient's medical history. Medical imaging techniques, such as a Doppler ultrasound, may be used to assess blood flow in the veins and identify any blockages or abnormalities.

Treatment for venenschwellung depends on the underlying cause and severity. Lifestyle modifications, such as regular exercise, weight management, and avoiding prolonged periods of standing or sitting, can be beneficial. Compression stockings are often recommended to improve blood circulation. In more severe cases, medical interventions like sclerotherapy, endovenous laser treatment, or surgery may be considered to close or remove affected veins.
