Vastustushäiriö refers to oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) in Finnish. It is a behavioral disorder that typically begins in childhood and is characterized by a persistent pattern of disobedient, hostile, and defiant behavior towards authority figures. Children and adolescents with ODD often lose their temper easily, argue with adults, deliberately annoy others, and blame others for their mistakes. They may also be easily annoyed, angry, spiteful, and vindictive.

The exact causes of oppositional defiant disorder are not fully understood, but it is believed to be a combination of genetic, biological, environmental, and psychological factors. Factors such as temperament, family dynamics, and exposure to stress or trauma may play a role. ODD is more common in boys than in girls, especially before puberty.

Diagnosis is made by a qualified mental health professional based on observed behaviors and interviews with the child and parents. The symptoms must be present for at least six months and cause significant impairment in social, academic, or occupational functioning. It's important to distinguish ODD from normal childhood defiance, as ODD involves a more severe and persistent pattern of behavior.

Treatment for oppositional defiant disorder often involves a combination of therapies. Parent management training is a common approach, teaching parents strategies to manage their child's behavior. Individual therapy, such as cognitive behavioral therapy, can help children develop coping skills and learn to manage anger and frustration. In some cases, family therapy may also be beneficial. Early intervention and consistent treatment are key to improving outcomes. Untreated ODD can sometimes lead to more severe conduct problems later in life.
