Varroasensitive
Varroasensitive, sometimes written Varroa-sensitive, is a term used in apiculture to denote a behavioral and, to some extent, genetic trait in honey bees that contributes to resistance against the Varroa destructor mite. In practice, Varroasensitive is most closely associated with Varroa-sensitive Hygiene (VSH), a suite of behaviors in which worker bees detect and remove brood that is infested with Varroa mites, thereby interrupting the mite’s reproductive cycle and reducing colony mite loads.
Mechanism and effects: Varroa mites reproduce in capped brood cells; by identifying and removing infested brood,
Genetics and breeding: Varroasensitive traits are partly heritable and can be enhanced through selective breeding based
Limitations and context: Varroasensitive is not a universal solution for Varroa control. Mite pressure, co-infections, and
