Uruguays

Uruguays is a term occasionally used to refer to the people of Uruguay or things related to Uruguay. The standard English demonym is Uruguayans; in Spanish, uruguayos. The country is in the southeastern part of South America, bordered by Brazil to the north and east, Argentina to the west, the Río de la Plata to the south, and the Atlantic Ocean to the southeast. Its terrain includes rivers, low-lying plains, and Atlantic beaches. Montevideo, on the south coast, is the capital and largest city.

Uruguay operates as a unitary presidential constitutional republic. The president serves as both head of state and head of government, elected for a five-year term with no immediate reelection. The General Assembly, bicameral, comprises the Senate and the Chamber of Representatives. The country has a long democratic tradition and its constitution provides for civil liberties and judicial independence.

Economy: Uruguay has a diversified, open economy with strong agricultural and service sectors. Key exports include dairy, beef, rice, soy, wool, and financial services. The country maintains a social welfare system, high literacy, and universal healthcare. The currency is the Uruguayan peso (UYU).

Demographics and culture: The population is mostly urban, with significant European ancestry, particularly Italian and Spanish, and a sizable Afro-Uruguayan community. Cultural life centers on music (candombe, tango), literature, and football. The national team has won the FIFA World Cup twice (1930, 1950).

Notable places: Colonia del Sacramento is a UNESCO World Heritage Site; Punta del Este is a renowned resort. The climate is temperate, with mild winters and warm summers.
