The president may sign laws and perform ceremonial duties. In semi-presidential systems, a president and a prime minister share executive power, with the president typically handling broader policy aims and foreign affairs, while the prime minister oversees day-to-day governance; the exact balance depends on the constitution and political practice.

Selection and tenure vary by country. Presidents may be elected directly by the people, by an electoral college, or by the legislature. Terms commonly range from four to seven years, with or without the possibility of renewal, and vacancies are filled according to constitutional rules. Throughout history, the presidency has evolved from ancient magistracies to modern institutions designed to balance leadership, legitimacy, and accountability.
