Täidesaatevfunktsioonides, often translated as executive functions, refers to a set of cognitive processes that control and regulate behavior. These are higher-level mental skills that allow individuals to plan, organize, initiate, monitor, and complete tasks. They are crucial for goal-directed behavior and adapting to new situations.

Key components of executive functions include working memory, which is the ability to hold and manipulate information; inhibitory control, the capacity to suppress unwanted thoughts or actions; and cognitive flexibility, the ability to switch between different tasks or perspectives. These functions are not localized in a single brain area but involve a network of brain regions, primarily in the prefrontal cortex.

Executive functions develop throughout childhood and adolescence, with significant maturation occurring during these periods. Deficits in executive functions are associated with a wide range of conditions, including attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), autism spectrum disorder, learning disabilities, and various neurological disorders. Difficulties in these areas can manifest as problems with time management, organization, impulse control, emotional regulation, and problem-solving.

Interventions aimed at improving executive functions often involve strategies for planning, organization, and self-monitoring, as well as direct training exercises. Developing strong executive functions is considered essential for academic success, social competence, and overall life adjustment.
