Toepassingsengineering, or applied engineering, refers to the practice of translating scientific and engineering principles into practical solutions for real-world problems. It focuses on the design, development, and deployment of systems, products, and processes that meet specific user requirements.

It spans early stages such as requirements elicitation, concept generation, and feasibility analysis, through detailed design, prototyping, testing, and production ramp-up. It emphasizes integration of multiple disciplines (mechanical, electrical, software, optics, materials) and consideration of manufacturability, reliability, maintainability, and cost.

It overlaps with systems engineering, product development, process engineering, and engineering consultancy. It is often applied within industrial settings, consumer electronics, automotive, energy, and healthcare.

Common tools include computer-aided design (CAD), finite element analysis (FEA), computational fluid dynamics (CFD), simulation and modeling, requirements management, and project management. Methods like design for manufacturability, design for reliability, risk assessment, and value engineering are used.

Education may be part of mechanical or electrical engineering curricula, or offered as applied engineering, industrial engineering, or systems engineering programs. Professionals work in engineering teams, coordinating with suppliers and customers to ensure solutions meet budgets and schedules.
