Text-based refers to content, interfaces, or media that rely primarily on text for communication and interaction, rather than graphical or multimedia elements. It covers software interfaces, narrative media, and information delivery that uses written characters as the main channel.

In computing, text-based user interfaces, or TUIs, present information in a grid of characters within a terminal or console. They use keyboard input and plain text or simple symbols, often employing color through ANSI codes. Common examples include command shells, text editors, and console programs.

In interactive entertainment, text-based games rely on textual descriptions and user commands. This includes interactive fiction and role-playing roguelikes that use ASCII or limited graphics. Classic titles such as Colossal Cave Adventure and Zork shaped early narrative-driven gameplay; later examples include NetHack and various MUDs.

Text-based content also figures in telecommunications and early online services, where information was delivered as plain text over dial-up networks or chat systems. SMS and other short-message formats continue to be text-centered, particularly for automated services and chatbots.

Modern usage remains widespread in contexts demanding low bandwidth, accessibility, or programmability. Text-based interfaces are valued for speed, scripting, and compatibility with screen readers, while sometimes serving as a lightweight alternative to graphical interfaces.

Limitations include the lack of visual context and a steeper learning curve for command syntax. Despite this, text-based approaches remain a foundational and enduring component of computing and digital media.
