TLSterrestrial

TLSterrestrial is a conceptual extension of Transport Layer Security (TLS) designed to provide encrypted and authenticated communications over terrestrial networks, including wired LANs, mobile broadband, and radio access environments. It aims to address the challenges of land-based networks where endpoints may be resource-constrained, connectivity can be intermittent, and networks are heterogeneous. The goal is to preserve TLS-style security guarantees while improving performance and reliability in non-ideal terrestrial conditions.

The design of TLSterrestrial emphasizes compatibility with existing TLS APIs while introducing optimizations for terrestrial conditions. Key features typically discussed include support for variable network characteristics such as changing MTUs and packet loss, mobility and handovers, and lightweight cryptographic suites suitable for constrained devices. It envisions a hierarchical certificate system with regional authorities to streamline trust management in large land-based deployments, along with enhanced session resumption and device attestation. Some proposals explore offline or near-offline verification and the integration of hardware security modules to protect keys in field devices.

Status and adoption of TLSterrestrial are informal and largely experimental. The term has appeared in academic papers and industry proposals, but there is no widely adopted official standard equivalent to TLS 1.x/1.3. Implementations exist in research prototypes and pilot projects, often within sectors such as industrial control, smart grids, and connected vehicles. Analyses emphasize security advantages for terrestrial environments, while cautioning about certificate management overhead, interoperability with existing TLS deployments, and the need for careful evaluation of post-quantum readiness and operational constraints.

TLSterrestrial is generally viewed as a complementary approach to TLS for non-HTTP protocols on terrestrial networks, rather than a wholesale replacement of TLS. It seeks to align strong cryptographic protections with the realities of land-based communications and diverse device capabilities.
