It refers to the process of classifying the extent and progression of a disease, most commonly cancer. This classification is crucial for guiding treatment decisions, predicting prognosis, and facilitating communication among healthcare professionals.

The staging system typically considers factors such as the size of the primary tumor, whether the cancer has spread to nearby lymph nodes, and if it has metastasized to distant parts of the body. Different cancer types have their own specific staging systems, but many follow general principles. The most widely used system for solid tumors is the TNM staging system, developed by the American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC). TNM stands for Tumor, Node, and Metastasis, with each component assigned a numerical value to describe its severity.
