Responsibilities typically include installing and wiring sensors, actuators, and control panels; programming and commissioning programmable logic controllers (PLCs) and related controllers; configuring supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) or other human–machine interfaces (HMI); diagnosing faults and performing preventive maintenance; optimizing control loops and energy use; updating documentation, and ensuring compliance with applicable safety and industry standards. In maritime contexts, styrtekniker may work on navigation or propulsion controls, steering systems, and integrated bridge systems, often collaborating with engineers, electricians, and vessel crews.

Education and training usually involves vocational or technical schooling in electrical engineering, automation, or mechatronics, sometimes complemented by a degree in automation or process control. Industry-specific certifications may be required, such as PLC programming, instrumentation, or safety training; maritime roles may require STCW and shipboard safety qualifications.
