Stuurbywire

Stuurbywire, also known as steer-by-wire, is an automotive technology that replaces or augments the traditional mechanical linkage between the steering wheel and the front wheels with electronic control. The driver’s input is converted into electronic signals, which are processed by a controller and then applied to actuators that steer the vehicle.

In a typical stuurbywire system, the steering wheel provides angle and torque data through sensors. An electronic control unit interprets these signals, determines the desired wheel angle, and commands actuators such as electric motors or hydraulic devices at the steering mechanism. Redundant channels and fault-detection algorithms are commonly included to maintain safety in case of component failure. The system also provides feedback to the driver, preserving a sense of steering feel through haptic feedback or other actuators.

Benefits of stuurbywire include greater design flexibility, since steering geometry can be varied without changing a physical linkage. It enables advanced vehicle dynamics control, improved integration with stability systems and driver-assistance technologies, and easier support for automated driving features. Potentially, it can reduce weight, simplify packaging, and allow variable assist levels depending on speed or mode.

Safety, reliability, and cybersecurity are central challenges. Because the steering path is controlled electronically, certification to functional-safety standards (such as ISO 26262) and robust fault detection are essential. Some designs maintain a mechanical backup or hybrid configurations to ensure fail-safe operation. Cost, reliability, and regulatory acceptance continue to influence adoption, with steer-by-wire most common in research, premium concepts, or as a component of electric/hybrid propulsion systems and advanced driver-assistance architectures.
