Startlinjen

Startlinjen, or the start line, is the reference line used to mark the starting point of a race or timed activity. It serves as the point from which elapsed time is measured and, in many sports, can determine whether a competitor accedes to the start conditions or incurs a penalty.

In athletics and other track disciplines, the startlinjen marks the position of the starting blocks or tape from which runners begin. A false start rule governs movements before the official signal, and timing is synchronized with electronic devices to ensure accuracy.

In sailing, the startlinjen is a line stretched between two marks or buoys. Boats must cross the line within a specified time window, and the direction of cross relative to the line can determine penalties or disqualification.

In motor sports, the concept is represented by the starting line or grid, where vehicles align before the race and depart at the signal. In many disciplines, the line also serves as a finish line in short formats or sprint events.

Marking and measurement are specialized: lines are often painted on surfaces, or defined by buoys and flags in the water. Timing relies on electronic systems, photofinish, and in sailing, countdown signals from the race committee.

The term is used in Swedish as startlinjen and has cognates in other Scandinavian languages. It describes a universal element in competitive racing: a clearly defined point that ensures a fair and measurable start.
