Smallcat

Smallcat is an informal term used to describe small-sized felines, including small domestic cats and some small wild species. It does not correspond to a formal taxonomic group and is not used in scientific classification. The term is commonly encountered in pet care discussions, casual writing, and online contexts where size is a practical shorthand.

Physical characteristics commonly associated with smallcats include a compact body, a lower body mass, and a proportionally smaller frame compared with larger domestic cats. Within the domestic population, weights typically range from about 2 to 4 kilograms, though individual size can vary due to genetics, age, and health. Coat length and color are diverse, and there is no universal pattern that defines a smallcat as a distinct breed or phenotype.

Taxonomy and classification: domestic cats belong to Felis catus, a member of the family Felidae. Several small wild felids, such as the sand cat (Felis margarita) and the black-footed cat (Felis nigripes), are sometimes described as small cats in common parlance, but they are not grouped under a single scientific category called “smallcat.” The term remains a layperson’s descriptor rather than a scientific designation.

Behavior and ecology: smallcats, like other felines, are typically carnivorous and rely on agility, sharp senses, and hunting instincts. Behavior varies widely between domesticated individuals and wild species, with temperament influenced by species, environment, and human interaction.

Care and welfare: for domestic smallcats, standard feline care applies—adequate nutrition, veterinary oversight, enrichment, and responsible ownership practices such as spaying or neutering and ensuring a safe living environment.
