Skumform

Skumform is a term used in Swedish manufacturing to describe a mold or form that shapes foam materials during fabrication. The reference covers molds used with polyurethane, silicone, and other cellular polymers produced by foaming processes. The mold defines the external geometry, surface texture, and, in some cases, aspects of the foam’s cellular structure in the finished part.

In typical foam forming, a reactive or viscous precursor is introduced into the mold cavity and allowed to expand, cure, and solidify. For polyurethane foams, components such as polyols and di- or polyisocyanates react, generating gas and forming a cellular matrix that fills the cavity. The mold may be heated or cooled to control cure rate and foam density. Release agents, venting, and inserts enable complex shapes and multi-material assemblies.

Skumform configurations vary and include metal or rigid plastic molds for durable parts, as well as flexible elastomeric molds for softer foams or prototyping. In some cases, mold linings or coatings improve surface finish and facilitate demolding. Surface texturing and inserts can be used to tailor appearance and mechanical properties.

Applications span automotive interiors and seating, bedding and furniture, packaging, construction insulation, footwear, medical devices, and consumer electronics housings. Advantages of foam forming include lightweight components, energy absorption, and the ability to produce complex geometries and integrated features. Limitations involve material costs, curing times, mold release challenges, and environmental considerations related to blowing agents and end-of-life disposal.
