Demolding is the process of removing a finished part from its mold after the material has cured or cooled. It is a common step in injection molding, compression molding, casting, composite layups, and concrete or ceramic molding. The goal is to extract the part without damaging it or the mold, while enabling continued production.

Successful demolding depends on design and process factors. Appropriate draft angles along parting lines reduce sticking and allow easier release. Adequate parting line clearance, controlled shrinkage, consistent surface finish, temperature management, and a durable mold material all influence demolding performance. Part geometry, wall thickness, and the number of undercuts or removable cores also affect the ease of release.

Ejection systems include mechanical ejectors such as pins, plates, and cores operated by hydraulic or pneumatic actuators; stripper rings; and, in some cases, manual removal. Other methods include air ejection, vacuum, or vibration to reduce sticking. The choice depends on part geometry, material properties, and cycle time.

Release agents are often used to facilitate release and extend mold life. They can be applied by spraying or brushing and may be wax-based, oil-based, silicone-based, or water-based. Compatibility with the material and post-processing steps must be considered to avoid residue or surface defects.

Common issues include excessive demolding force causing part or mold damage, insufficient draft or irregular shrinkage leading to sticking, and tearing or distortion from rapid demolding. Solutions include redesign for better draft, mold segmentation, ramped ejection, adjusted cooling, or selecting appropriate release agents.

Safety and quality considerations include ensuring molds are properly clamped and cooled, avoiding pinch points, and using appropriate personal protective equipment. Proper demolding supports consistent production, minimizes cycle time, and preserves mold integrity.
