Structural compatibility means materials can be deposited or bonded without introducing defects or mechanical stress that would degrade devices. Chemical compatibility involves cleanroom process compatibility and avoiding residues or reactions that could contaminate CMOS lines. Applications include silicon photonics, where optoelectronic materials are integrated with silicon to enable on-chip communication, as well as silicon-based MEMS and biosensors that pair mechanical or chemical sensing with CMOS readout. Examples also include lithium niobate or other electro-optic materials integrated on silicon platforms, and two-dimensional materials transferred onto silicon.

Challenges remain, including lattice and thermal mismatch, defect densities, optical losses, process contamination, and reliability under operation. Meeting manufacturability requirements requires careful control of interfaces, packaging, and thermal management, while maintaining CMOS process integrity.

Overall, silicon-compatible materials and processes enable multifunctionality on CMOS platforms, supporting co-design of electronic and photonic systems and sensors with higher integration density and potential cost benefits.
