Shiftmelancholy is a term used in occupational health and popular discourse to describe a transient mood downturn experienced by workers during or after shift work, particularly night shifts or rotating schedules. It is not a formal clinical diagnosis but a descriptive label for a pattern of mood and energy fluctuations tied to work timing.

Individuals may report temporary sadness or low mood, fatigue, irritability, reduced motivation, concentration difficulties, and social withdrawal. The onset often coincides with night or early-morning shifts or the subsequent daytime recovery period, and the mood typically improves after a return to regular daylight hours and adequate sleep. The duration can range from a few hours to a day.

Shiftmelancholy is thought to arise from circadian misalignment, sleep debt, and irregular light exposure, as well as social isolation and stress related to work demands. Hormonal rhythms such as melatonin and cortisol can be disrupted by nocturnal activity, contributing to mood changes.

It differs from major depressive disorder in that it is tightly linked to work timing and is usually temporary and reversible with circadian realignment. When symptoms persist beyond weeks, or are accompanied by persistent anhedonia or self-harm risk, evaluation for a mood disorder is warranted.

Estimates vary, but mood fluctuations are commonly reported among shift workers. Management strategies emphasize regular sleep schedules, stable shift design when possible, light exposure management (bright light during night shifts, dark environment after wake times), strategic napping, and social support. Employers may help by optimizing shift rotations and providing resources for sleep and stress management.
