Sensoorseneuraalse refers to a type of hearing loss where the inner ear (cochlea) or the auditory nerve is damaged. This damage prevents sound signals from being processed correctly and transmitted to the brain. Unlike conductive hearing loss, which involves problems in the outer or middle ear, sensorineural hearing loss is typically permanent.

Causes of sensorineural hearing loss are diverse. Aging (presbycusis) is a common factor, leading to gradual deterioration of hearing. Exposure to loud noises, whether from occupational settings or recreational activities, can also cause irreversible damage to the delicate hair cells in the cochlea. Certain medications, known as ototoxic drugs, can have a detrimental effect on hearing. Viral or bacterial infections, genetic factors, Meniere's disease, and head trauma are other potential contributors.

Symptoms of sensorineural hearing loss can range from mild difficulty understanding speech in noisy environments to complete deafness. Individuals may experience tinnitus, a ringing or buzzing sensation in the ears. The ability to hear high-frequency sounds is often affected first. Diagnosis involves audiological tests, such as pure-tone audiometry, to assess the degree and type of hearing loss.

While sensorineural hearing loss is generally not reversible, management strategies aim to improve communication and quality of life. Hearing aids are commonly prescribed to amplify sounds and make them more audible. Cochlear implants may be an option for individuals with severe to profound hearing loss who do not benefit sufficiently from hearing aids. Speech therapy and aural rehabilitation can help individuals adapt to their hearing loss and develop coping mechanisms. Early detection and intervention are crucial for maximizing the effectiveness of these management approaches.
