Senkfuß

Senkfuß, also known as fallen arches or flat feet, is a condition characterized by the diminished or absent medial longitudinal arch of the foot. In individuals with Senkfuß, the arch of the foot appears flattened, causing the entire sole to come into near or complete contact with the ground during standing or walking. This condition can be present at birth (congenital) or develop over time (acquired) due to various factors.

Congenital Senkfuß is present from birth, often resulting from abnormal development of the foot's bones, tendons, or ligaments. Acquired forms are commonly caused by overuse, injury, or conditions that weaken the supporting structures of the foot such as tendinitis, ligament damage, obesity, or neurological disorders. Additionally, aging can lead to gradual deterioration of the arch due to ligament laxity and muscle weakening.

Symptoms of Senkfuß may include aching, fatigue, or pain in the feet and lower legs, especially after prolonged standing or physical activity. In some cases, flat feet can contribute to abnormal gait, heel or ankle pain, and increased risk of bunions or plantar fasciitis.

Diagnosis is primarily clinical, involving visual inspection and assessment of foot structure often supplemented by imaging techniques such as X-rays to evaluate bone alignment and arch height. Treatment options range from conservative measures like orthotic insoles, stretching exercises, and footwear modifications to surgical procedures in severe cases where structural correction is necessary.

While many individuals with flat feet experience no symptoms or functional limitations, persistent or painful Senkfuß may require intervention to improve comfort and prevent secondary issues related to abnormal foot biomechanics.
