Sekretolytische refers to substances or treatments that promote the loosening and expulsion of mucus from the respiratory tract. The term originates from the German words "sekret" (secretion) and "lytisch" (dissolving or breaking down). These agents are commonly used in the management of conditions characterized by excessive or thickened mucus production, such as bronchitis, pneumonia, and other respiratory infections.

The primary mechanism of action for sekretolytika involves altering the physical properties of bronchial secretions. They can either reduce the viscosity of the mucus, making it easier to cough up, or increase the volume of less viscous mucus, which helps to flush out trapped particles and pathogens.
