SchalterSchieber is a term used in German-language technical writing to describe a sliding switch mechanism. The compound word combines Schalter (switch) and Schieber (slider) and is often used to refer to devices in which a linear sliding element actuates electrical contacts to select a circuit or adjust a parameter.

Construction and function: The device comprises a housing with fixed contacts arranged along a track and a movable conductive wiper or several contact tongues attached to a slider. Moving the Schieber along the track causes some contacts to connect while others disconnect, enabling one or more poles to change state. The switch can be momentary or latching and may provide a defined detent.

Variants: Sliding switches come in SPST, SPDT, DPDT and multi-pole configurations; can be panel-mounted or PCB-mounted; actuation can be vertical or horizontal; typical operation modes include on-off, on-off-on, or a variety of mixed arrangements.

Applications: Common in consumer electronics such as audio equipment, power supplies, and instrument panels; also used in test gear and automotive dashboards. They are valued for their simple operation and clear tactile feedback, though they have fallen out of favor in some compact designs due to modern tactile switches and digital controls.

Design considerations: Electrical rating (voltage, current), contact material and plating, mechanical life (actuation cycles), travel distance, and environmental resistance. Maintenance may be needed to prevent contact corrosion or contamination in harsh environments.
