Scarifikation, or scarification, is a term used to describe processes that alter surface tissue to influence development or appearance. In botany, scarifikation refers to the deliberate weakening or breaking of a seed coat to overcome physical dormancy and promote germination. In body modification, scarifikation denotes the intentional creation of permanent scars on the skin for decorative, ritual, or symbolic purposes. In German-language sources, the term Scarifikation is commonly used.
