Samyagcaritra

Samyagcaritra is a Sanskrit term that translates to "right conduct" or "proper behavior." It is a core concept in several Indian religions, particularly Jainism and Buddhism. In Jainism, Samyagcaritra is the third jewel of the Trikalpa, alongside Samyagdarshana (right faith) and Samyagjnana (right knowledge). It represents the practical application of ethical principles in daily life, guiding actions and intentions.

The practice of Samyagcaritra involves abstaining from harmful actions and cultivating virtuous ones. This includes adhering to vows such as non-violence (ahimsa), truthfulness (satya), non-stealing (asteya), celibacy or chastity (brahmacharya), and non-possession or non-attachment (aparigraha). These vows are observed with varying degrees of strictness for monks, nuns, and lay followers. The ultimate aim of Samyagcaritra is to purify the soul and progress towards liberation or moksha.

In Buddhism, the concept is closely related to the Noble Eightfold Path, particularly the aspects of right action (samyak-karmanta), right livelihood (samyag-ajiva), and right effort (samyag-vyayama). These elements emphasize ethical conduct, mindfulness, and the cultivation of positive mental states. Samyagcaritra, in this context, refers to living a life that is free from malice, cruelty, and dishonesty, and is conducive to spiritual development and the cessation of suffering. It is an integral part of the path to enlightenment.
