Unlike inadvertent errors, dishonesty implies a chosen violation of truthfulness, and may encompass actions, statements, or omissions.

Common forms include lying (making false statements), deceit (manipulative practices to create a false impression), fraud (guise of truth to obtain material gain), cheating (violating rules or norms), falsification of records, plagiarism, bribery, and concealment.

Motivations vary: self-interest, fear of punishment or loss, pressure from others, or a desire for social capital. Context matters: professional settings, personal relationships, politics, or business. Some cultures distinguish between white lies intended to spare feelings and malicious deception; others condemn any deception.

Effects: erodes trust, damages relationships and institutions, can cause financial harm, and leads to reputational damage. Societies increasingly rely on norms, audits, verification, and accountability mechanisms to deter dishonesty.

Ethical assessment and responses: honesty is valued as a virtue in many traditions, but norms are not universal.
