SREkäytäntöihin, often translated as SRE practices, refers to the set of principles and methodologies used in Site Reliability Engineering. SRE is a discipline that incorporates aspects of software engineering and applies them to infrastructure and operations problems. The primary goal is to create highly reliable and scalable software systems.

Key SREkäytäntöihin include defining and measuring service level objectives (SLOs) and service level indicators (SLIs). SLOs are specific, measurable targets for the performance and availability of a service, while SLIs are the metrics used to track progress towards those SLOs. Error budgets, which represent the acceptable level of unreliability, are also central to SREkäytäntöihin. If an error budget is depleted, engineering teams must shift focus from developing new features to improving reliability.

Automation is another cornerstone of SREkäytäntöihin. This involves automating repetitive operational tasks such as deployment, monitoring, incident response, and capacity planning. By reducing manual intervention, SRE aims to minimize human error and free up engineers to focus on more strategic work.

Incident management is also a critical aspect. SREkäytäntöihin emphasize a blameless postmortem culture, where the focus is on understanding the root cause of an incident and implementing preventive measures, rather than assigning blame. This fosters a learning environment and encourages open communication about failures.

Toil, defined as manual, repetitive, tactical work that scales with service growth, is actively sought out and eliminated through automation. The aim is to spend no more than 50% of an SRE's time on toil, dedicating the rest to engineering work that improves the system's reliability and efficiency. Load balancing, monitoring, and distributed systems design are also integral to successful SRE implementation.
