Roomsits

Roomsits, also written as room-sits, is a practice in which an individual is stationed in a specific room to supervise, monitor, or maintain that room and its contents. The arrangement differs from full-house sitting or property security by concentrating presence on a single room, rather than an entire dwelling or building.

It can arise in various contexts—hotels and boutique accommodations where a room might be kept secure between guests; artist studios, laboratories, or archives where sensitive equipment or materials require on-site oversight; or during events and residencies where a room must be observed for access control or environmental stability.

Typical roles include monitoring entry, recording access, keeping environmental controls (temperature, humidity), basic maintenance (tidying, turning equipment on/off), and providing a visible presence to deter unwanted activity. In artistic or archival settings, a roomsit may also be tasked with safeguarding irreplaceable materials and ensuring equipment remains ready for use.

Legal and ethical considerations: roomsits must respect privacy, obtain consent from the facility owner, and comply with applicable laws. Depending on the setting, monitoring may involve cameras or logbooks; owners should disclose such measures to not violate privacy rights.
