Robustnesstests, also known as robustness testing, is a quality assurance practice that assesses how well a system tolerates invalid inputs, unexpected conditions, and environmental stress. The objective is to ensure stability, graceful degradation, and recoverability rather than peak performance under nominal conditions. Robustness testing typically examines input validation, error handling, resource constraints, and fault tolerance across components.

Key areas include negative testing (ensuring proper handling of invalid data), boundary value analysis, and resilience to hardware or network faults. Tests may simulate timeouts, partial outages, latency spikes, memory exhaustion, or concurrent access conflicts. Fault injection and chaos engineering are common techniques for forcing faults in controlled environments to observe recovery behavior and logging. In software, robustness is often linked to secure and reliable operation, including clear error messages and safe failure modes.

Robustnesstests differ from stress or performance testing. Stress testing focuses on system limits under high load, whereas robustness testing concentrates on maintaining safe operation when conditions deviate from normal. It is frequently applied during integration and system testing, and also in safety-critical domains such as embedded systems, aerospace, or medical devices, where failures can have severe consequences.

In practice, teams define robustness requirements based on use cases and risk analysis, design representative fault scenarios, automate test execution, and measure outcomes such as failure rate, recovery time, and user-visible degradation. When appropriate, robustness testing complements formal verification and monitoring to improve system resilience over the software lifecycle.
