Riesenslalom

Riesenslalom, or giant slalom, is an alpine skiing discipline in which athletes race down a mountain through a sequence of gates set at wider spacing than in slalom. The event is part of the Olympic program, the FIS Alpine World Cup, and the FIS World Championships, attracting competitors from many nations.

A competition comprises two runs on different courses on the same slope, with the times from both runs added to determine the final ranking. Gates are arranged to require longer, carved turns rather than the rapid, short-radius maneuvers of slalom. The overall course length, gate spacing, and vertical drop vary by competition and gender, but the principle remains: a balance of speed and technical precision. In major events, the starting order for the second run is based on the results of the first run, typically with faster skiers following or preceding in reverse order depending on the rules.

Technique and equipment emphasize longer, steeper turns and more anticipatory line choice. Ski lengths are generally longer than those used in slalom, encouraging stable edging and powerful carving. Racers focus on clean transitions between gates, body position, and controlled speed management through sweeping arcs. Protective gear such as helmets is essential, and modern suits and ski construction are optimized for stability at high speeds.

Rules and safety apply to gate compliance, with penalties for missing or passing an incorrect gate. Disqualifications can occur for incorrect course adherence. The discipline emphasizes technical skill, precise navigation of the turning line, and the ability to maintain rhythm across two demanding runs.
