Retropeegeldav

Retropeegeldav is a term used to describe materials and surfaces that reflect light back toward its source, thereby enhancing visibility in low-light conditions. In English, this phenomenon is generally called retroreflection or retroreflectivity. Retropeegeldav materials are designed to return light toward the viewer rather than scattering it in many directions, which makes objects wearing or bearing them stand out when illuminated by headlights or other artificial light.

The underlying mechanism relies on specific optical structures. The main types are cube-corner microprisms, microprism sheets, and glass-bead retroreflective layers. Cube-corner prisms guide incoming light to travel back toward the light source, while glass beads and microprisms use a combination of refraction and reflection to achieve a similar effect. The choice of technology affects brightness, viewing angle, and color appearance.

Common applications include road signs, lane markings, and safety clothing or gear such as vests and backpacks. Vehicle markings, bicycle reflectors, and emergency equipment often employ retroreflective materials to improve nighttime or poor-weather visibility for wearers and operators.

Properties and considerations include high back-directed reflectivity across wide angles, resistance to weathering, and the need for regular cleaning to maintain performance. The color of retroreflective materials is typically determined by the pigment used, with white and bright colors enhancing conspicuity under various lighting conditions. In Europe and many other regions, retroreflective materials used on signs and safety garments are governed by standards such as EN 12899 and EN 20471, among others.
