Lowlight refers to situations with reduced illumination. It covers natural conditions such as dusk, twilight, overcast weather, shade, and indoor spaces with subdued artificial lighting. Light levels are measured in lux, but thresholds vary by context; daylight typically exceeds 10,000 lux, standard indoor lighting ranges from tens to a few hundred lux, and very low-light conditions can fall below 10 lux or even into single digits.

In photography and cinematography, low-light conditions pose challenges for exposure, color accuracy, and motion. Techniques to mitigate these include using fast lenses with wide maximum apertures (low f-number), increasing ISO sensitivity, and longer shutter speeds, often supported by stabilizing equipment like tripods. Camera technology such as larger sensors and advanced noise reduction, as well as computational methods that combine multiple frames, are commonly used to improve image quality in low light.

In consumer electronics, low-light performance describes how well a device's sensors and processing handle dark scenes. This includes aspects such as dynamic range, noise levels, color fidelity, and autofocus speed at low illumination. Features sometimes marketed as night mode or low-light enhancement attempt to optimize captures for dim conditions.

In design and safety contexts, low lighting influences visibility, mood, and energy efficiency. Architects and event planners consider illuminance, glare, and contrast to ensure legibility and safety while achieving the desired ambiance.
