An aperture is an opening through which light or other radiation passes in an optical system. In imaging instruments such as cameras, microscopes, and telescopes, the aperture is typically formed by a diaphragm or iris and is adjustable to control how much light reaches the sensor or detector. The size is commonly described by the f-number (f/N), the ratio of the system’s focal length to the effective aperture diameter. A smaller f-number denotes a larger opening and more light; a larger f-number denotes a smaller opening and less light.

In addition to exposure, the aperture influences depth of field—the range of distances that appear acceptably sharp. Wider apertures yield shallower depth of field, while narrower apertures increase depth of field. The aperture also interacts with diffraction and optical aberrations: at very small openings, diffraction can soften an image, whereas very large openings may reveal or exaggerate lens imperfections.

The light-gathering ability of an optical system scales with the area of the aperture, i.e., with the square of its diameter. In astronomy and photography, larger apertures improve brightness and, up to diffraction limits, angular resolution. The eye has a natural, adjustable aperture (the pupil) that performs a similar function psychologically and physiologically.

Many modern lenses use adjustable diaphragms composed of multiple blades; the number and arrangement of blades influence the shape of the aperture and, consequently, bokeh and edge performance. Apertures are a fundamental concept across photography, microscopy, astronomy, and various optical instruments, governing both brightness and sharpness of the image.
