Architects are professionals who plan, design, and oversee the construction of buildings and other structures. Most jurisdictions require formal training in architecture, typically a professional degree followed by supervised practical experience. After completing a degree such as a Bachelor or Master of Architecture, candidates usually enter a paid internship period and pass licensure exams to practice independently. Requirements vary by country and region.

Architects work through stages including client briefing, site analysis, schematic design, design development, construction documents, bidding or procurement, and construction administration. They coordinate with engineers, landscape designers, contractors, and clients. Common tools include computer-aided design and building information modeling, along with traditional drawing and model-making.

Many architects specialize in areas such as urban design, interior architecture, historic preservation, or sustainable design. Beyond drawings, their duties may include project management, cost estimation, feasibility studies, code compliance, and writing and presenting proposals. Accessibility, safety standards, and energy efficiency are increasingly emphasized in modern practice.

Architects have existed since ancient times as master builders and planners. The role evolved through the Renaissance and modern era into a distinct profession with standardized training and regulation, shaping the built environment across cultures and economies.
