Resource sharing occurs in a variety of settings, including households, organizations, and online networks, and is a core element of collaborative work and efficient infrastructure use.

Common forms include file sharing and collaborative access to documents, network printer sharing within organizations, and the provisioning of computing and storage resources in cloud, cluster, or grid environments. Data sharing among researchers, open data platforms, and content delivery networks that distribute bandwidth and caches across regions are also examples. Resource sharing often involves cross-platform access and inter-organizational cooperation.

Mechanisms to enable resource sharing typically involve authentication and authorization, access control policies, quotas or fair-use rules, auditing and logging, and licensing terms or acceptable-use policies. Technical implementations use standard protocols and interfaces that allow controlled access to resources while protecting confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
