Raisedprint

Raisedprint is a term used to describe text or graphics that are molded, embossed, or otherwise raised above the surface of a substrate to be felt by touch. It functions as tactile typography, intended to improve accessibility for people with vision impairments and for readers who benefit from tactile cues. Raisedprint can appear on paper, plastic, textiles, and signage, and is often used in combination with braille, high-contrast colors, or large print.

Production methods include traditional embossing, which uses dies and pressure; thermographic printing, which fuses resin powder to form a raised layer; and additive methods such as 3D printing or coating with thick, curable resins. Some designs employ shallow relief for quick tactile recognition, while others use thicker relief for longer exploration by fingertips.

Applications include educational materials for learners with visual impairment or dyslexia, public signage and wayfinding, product packaging, accessibility features on books and magazines, and security or authentication features on currency or documents. In designing raisedprint, creators balance tactile discernibility with durability and cost, and integrate it with other accessibility features such as braille, larger type, or audible alternatives.

Standards and guidelines for tactile features vary by country. Designers consider factors such as relief height, contrast, and the target audience’s tactile sensitivity. Testing with users is often recommended to validate legibility and comfort of handling.
