RTUer

RTUer is a term used in industrial automation to describe a technician, engineer, or operator who works with remote terminal units (RTUs). Although not an official job title, RTUer is commonly used by utilities, process plants, and integration contractors to designate personnel responsible for deploying, configuring, and maintaining RTUs that collect field data and relay it to SCADA systems.

Typical duties include selecting suitable RTU hardware, installing and wiring I/O, configuring communications links (serial and Ethernet), programming control logic, and mapping inputs and outputs. RTUers perform system commissioning, conduct periodic maintenance, diagnose faults, and implement firmware updates. They monitor telemetry and alarms, log data, and ensure data integrity and secure transmissions in accordance with safety and cybersecurity policies.

Required competencies often include a background in electrical engineering, automation, or a related field; familiarity with RTU brands and hardware; knowledge of industrial communication protocols such as Modbus, DNP3, and IEC 60870-5; experience with SCADA or HMI systems; and basic networking and cybersecurity awareness. Reading wiring diagrams, performing field troubleshooting, and coordinating with control room operators are common tasks.

RTUers work across utilities (electric, water, gas), oil and gas, and manufacturing environments where remote monitoring and control are essential. The term is largely descriptive and regional, with no single standardized certification path exclusive to RTUers beyond general instrumentation and control training.
