In practice, printertodisplay involves a signaling path from the printer or print server to a display endpoint such as a workstation, mobile device, or dedicated room display. Endpoints may be local (USB, Bluetooth, LAN) or networked (Wi-Fi, cloud). The exchanged data typically covers status information, queue position, and job attributes, with optional previews represented as images or documents. Data formats often use standard management protocols and interoperable formats, including JSON or XML for status and control data, and PDF or image formats for previews where supported.

Common use cases include real-time monitoring dashboards for IT administrators, user-side previews before releasing a print, queue auditing, and remote assistance or troubleshooting. Security considerations center on authentication and authorization of display endpoints, encryption of data in transit, and careful handling of sensitive or confidential print content to avoid inadvertent exposure.
