Prayertime

Prayertime refers to the daily schedule of Islamic ritual prayers, typically the five daily prayers known as Fajr, Dhuhr, Asr, Maghrib, and Isha. The exact times are determined by the sun’s position in the sky as observed from a specific location and date, and they can vary by geographic latitude and season. Practitioners use prayertime to plan the performance of each prayer within its prescribed period.

Calculation methods for prayertime combine astronomical data with religious conventions. Dhuhr is generally the time of solar noon, while Fajr and Isha rely on sun positions below the horizon (often expressed as twilight angles). Asr timing depends on a juristic rule related to the shadow length cast by objects. Different communities and calculation packages may adopt slightly different twilight angles (for example, commonly 18 degrees for Fajr and Isha, though other values exist) or alternate approaches such as fixed intervals after sunset. In high latitudes, some locations apply adjustments or alternative rules when days are very short or very long.

Prayertime is used by individuals and communities for daily worship, sermon schedules at mosques, and social or educational programming. Modern tools include mobile apps, websites, and electronic prayer clocks that compute times from the user’s location, offer notifications, and synchronize with calendars. Some providers publish times based on specific calculation methods or juristic opinions, and users may select among these options to reflect personal or community preferences.
