Asr

Asr is an Arabic term meaning "late afternoon" and is commonly used in Islam to refer to Salat al-Asr, the third of the five daily prayers. The word also denotes the afternoon period in Islamic timekeeping, which varies by location and traditional interpretation.

Salat al-Asr is performed after the Dhuhr prayer and before sunset. The exact start time depends on juristic tradition (madhab) and local practice; some schools calculate it as when the shadow of a vertical object exceeds its length plus the noon shadow, while others use different thresholds. The window for Asr ends at sunset, at which point Maghrib prayer may be offered.

ASR is also an acronym for Automatic Speech Recognition, a technology that converts spoken language into written text. ASR systems are used in voice assistants, transcription services, and accessibility tools. They rely on acoustic and language models, machine learning, and large speech datasets to interpret and transcribe speech.

In general usage, Asr appears in calendars and religious texts as the name of the afternoon period and is sometimes transliterated as Aṣr.
