Pottenbakkers

Pottenbakkers, also known as potters, are craftspeople who create objects from clay. The process typically involves shaping the clay, either by hand, on a potter's wheel, or using molds. Once shaped, the clay objects are dried and then fired in a kiln at high temperatures, which hardens them permanently. This firing process transforms the clay into ceramic.

The earliest evidence of pottery dates back thousands of years, making it one of the oldest human technologies. Early pottery was often utilitarian, used for storage, cooking, and serving food. Over time, pottenbakkers began to develop artistic and decorative styles, leading to the creation of sculptures, ornamental vessels, and tiles.

Pottery techniques vary widely, with different cultures and regions developing unique methods and aesthetic traditions. Common clay types include earthenware, stoneware, and porcelain, each requiring different firing temperatures and resulting in distinct characteristics. Glazes are often applied to the fired clay to add color, texture, and a waterproof surface. These glazes themselves are a complex mixture of minerals that melt and fuse to the clay during a second firing.

Today, pottenbakkers continue to practice both traditional and contemporary forms of the craft. While industrial production has replaced much of handmade pottery for everyday use, individual pottenbakkers often focus on artisanal, functional, and sculptural pieces. Their work can be found in homes, galleries, and museums, preserving a rich artistic heritage.
