Poliamidet

Poliamidet, or polyamide, is a class of polymers containing amide linkages in the main chain. They are among the most widely used polymers, existing as aliphatic and aromatic forms and as fibers or engineering plastics. The best-known example is nylon.

Synthesis of polyamides typically occurs by condensation polymerization of diamines with diacids (for example hexamethylene diamine and adipic acid give PA66) or by ring-opening polymerization of lactams (caprolactam gives PA6). Other routes include polycondensation of amino acids or their derivatives. These processes yield linear, often semi-crystalline materials with varying melting temperatures and mechanical properties.

Properties of polyamides include high strength, stiffness, abrasion resistance, and chemical resilience. They are, however, hygroscopic and absorb moisture from the environment, which can reduce stiffness and dimensional stability. Depending on grade and crystallinity, melting temperatures commonly range from roughly 180 to 270°C. The presence of crystalline regions contributes to rigidity and chemical resistance, while moisture content influences electrical and mechanical behavior.

Processing and applications: Polyamides are processed by extrusion, injection molding, or filament spinning. They are used as engineering plastics for automotive components, gears, bearings, and electrical housings; as nylon fibers in textiles, carpeting, and tire cords; and in films and packaging for certain grades. Some polyamides are formulated with additives to improve fire resistance or UV stability.

Environment and recycling: Recycling options include mechanical reprocessing and chemical recycling, though moisture sensitivity and contamination complicate streams. Some polyamides are produced from bio-based monomers, such as PA11 derived from castor oil, which can reduce dependence on fossil feedstocks. End-of-life management varies by grade and application.

Variants: The polyamide family also includes aramids (high-temperature, flame-resistant fibers) and polyamide-imides, which offer greater thermal stability but are more challenging to process.
