Pithecophaga

Pithecophaga is a genus of eagles in the family Accipitridae, consisting of a single living species, the Philippine eagle (Pithecophaga jefferyi). This bird is also known as the monkey-eating eagle, though its diet is not exclusively monkeys. It is one of the largest and most powerful eagles in the world.

The Philippine eagle is endemic to the Philippines and is found in forests on four major islands: Luzon, Samar, Leyte, and Mindanao. It is a critically endangered species, with a population estimated to be only a few hundred individuals. The primary threats to its survival are habitat loss and fragmentation due to deforestation, as well as hunting.

This eagle is characterized by its striking appearance, with a shaggy crest of feathers, a distinctive facial disc, and a long, broad tail. Its plumage is predominantly brown and white, with darker markings on its wings and back. The Philippine eagle is a formidable predator, preying on mammals such as monkeys, civets, and flying squirrels, as well as birds and reptiles. It is a monogamous species, typically laying one or two eggs per clutch. Conservation efforts are underway to protect this iconic bird and its habitat, including habitat restoration, anti-poaching patrols, and captive breeding programs.
